Prof. Wang Mingzi’s Research Group Makes Progress in the Field of Microbial Resistance and Antibiotic Degradation

Aminoglycosides, with strong ototoxicity and nephrotoxicity, are widely used and almost nondegradable because of their stable glycosidic bond structure. Prof. Wang Mingzi’s research group of FNU sifted a drug-resistant bacterial strain, Aquamicrobium sp A3-1, which can efficiently degrade aminoglycoside antibiotics such as kanamycin. It was found that a novel oxidoreductase, AkuKGD, catalyzed the degradation reaction, directly breaking the glycosidic bonds of aminoglycoside antibiotic molecules. The finding is of great significance for the research into microbial resistance and the development of new applications for enzymatic degradation of organic pollutants.

The research, titled “Deglycosylation Inactivation Initiated by a Novel Periplasmic Dehydrogenase Complex Provides a Novel Strategy for Eliminating the Recalcitrant Antibiotic Kanamycin”, was published online in the magazine Environmental Science & Technology.

FNU is the first organization of the paper, with Prof. Wang Mingzi and Prof. Chen Bilian as the co-corresponding authors, and School of Life Sciences and Engineering Research Center of Industrial Microbiology of Ministry of Education of FNU as the first corresponding organizations; Chen Zhihong, a doctor of the class of 2016, is the first author, with Liu Xin, a doctoral student of the class of 2022, Chen Liwen, a master of the class of 2012, Han Yong, an associate professor of Shandong University and Prof. Shen Yuemao of Shandong University as the co-authors. The work was funded by the Innovation Foundation of Science and Technology Department of Fujian Province.
