120th Anniversary Celebration Announcement

November 17, 2027, will mark the 120th anniversary of Fujian Normal University. On this joyous occasion, we will be honored to welcome alumni from home and abroad and distinguished guests from all sectors to our campus. Together, we will celebrate this milestone for a prestigious university in the provincial capital and share our vision for its ever-brighter future.
Our story began in 1907—the 33rd year of the Guangxu reign of the Qing Dynasty—when our distinguished founder, the late Mr. Chen Baochen (courtesy name Tao’an), a prominent late-Qing statesman deeply devoted to his native Fujian, returned to the province and established Fujian Superior Normal School, the predecessor of today’s university. Over the decades, the institution passed through several historical stages, including Fukien Christian University, Hwa-Nan Women’s College of Arts and Sciences, Fujian Provincial Teachers School, National Maritime Frontier School, Fujian College, and Fujian Provincial Research Institute. After successive restructurings and mergers, Fujian Normal College was formally established in 1953 and renamed Fujian Normal University in 1972—the name it bears today.
After 120 years of development, Fujian Normal University carries the indelible marks of generations of renowned scholars and beloved educators, and still radiates the enduring vitality of academic pursuit and educational excellence. The university has formed its motto, “To Know and to Act, with Devotion and with Aspiration,” and cultivated a campus ethos of “teaching earnestly, studying diligently, seeking truth, and promoting innovation.” Through its care and cultivation—like tending fragrant orchids and nurturing peach and plum blossoms—it has fostered hundreds of thousands of outstanding talents for society and made indelible contributions to national and local development. Today, the university is steadily advancing toward the grand goal of becoming a “Double First-Class” university.
Fujian’s mountains and rivers have long nurtured grace and brilliance. The 120th anniversary celebration will comprise four key components: pooling strengths for development, hosting academic symposia, reviewing university history, and strengthening bonds among faculty, students, and alumni. The celebration will be rooted in solemnity and frugality and guided by pragmatism and initiative. As Yan Zhitui of the Northern Qi Dynasty wrote in Yan Family Precepts, “Learning is like planting a tree: you admire its blossoms in spring and reap its fruits in autumn.” May this 120th anniversary bring abundant and fulfilling fruits of achievement to all faculty, students, alumni, and distinguished guests, and may we all attain great accomplishments and build a grand cause on the great journey of forging ahead in the new era.
